I am currently in the middle of cutting out rust from a car floor pan, and will need to know soon whether i can do spot welds or do i have to run a bead?
One component no car can do without is the floor pan. Gonna tackle for the first time. Sheet metal hole punch and 3/8” drill bit: Building a full floor begins with a bunch of smaller pieces that form the rear trunk floor and main seat floorpans.
I want a seamless install or a full pan replacement. But if i was to weld in a floor pan i always but weld. I have installed the 3rd gen 1 piece floor pan avaliable now and it fits like a glove. Repair fenders, quarter panels, trunk floors, firewalls, doors or floor pans quickly and permanently without welding.

A replacement floor pan costs anywhere from around $40 to as much as $900, depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model. With the body out of the way replacing the floor pans is pretty straight forward. The black e coat primer burns off and will rust within weeks when exposed to moisture. The first step was to cut out the rust. Set the pan over the old trace it out cut below your line about an 1/8th of an inch. So cut out the big pieces and then carefully trim the pan off the braces. Removing rusty floor pans (hands on cars e.03) posted:
Also where to buy the pans to do the least trimming and best cost. Plug welds were made from the middle of the floor pan outwards, moving between flanges to allow the panel to cool between plug welds. Once the welding is done go along the top and bottom edges with seam. A corroded floor pan is especially brittle and can chip without warning.
Stock replacement parts in floors and rockers i would not use it. But with just a little more effort they can be replaced with the body still in place. The idea was to allow any distortion to travel out of the panel, rather than welding from each end and ending up with a bend in the middle. But on a quaterpanel you still need to weld the seam.
With the trunk floor now finished off with the silver portion of the por 15, it was time for the black coating. When the exterior appears rusty and features several holes, it might be time for a replacement. A full pan does take extra effort to install when compared to a single patch panel, but it will save time when compared to cutting welding and fining multiple patch panels. Year old kubota rtv 900 had seen some better days.
Remove old pan, once the new pan is reinstalled you may have to gring a little here and there to make the seam fit. Using a rotisserie, an eastwood mig 175 welder, replacement stampings from national part depot and a bfh kevin gets to work replacing the floorpans on the zed sled 1978 chevy camaro. I really dont want to tack weld. 3.drill holes through the new floor pan every 1 around the perimeter.
Repairs with patch panels or custom fabricated panels utilizing our panel adhesive can be done with structural integrity far superior to rivets themselves. Full one piece pans do come with a higher part cost, but is well worth it in time savings and quality when the option presents itself. When coating larger areas, you can spray por 15 with a gun, but be sure to wear a mask and carefully clean every orifice of the spray gun before the paint dries. If i remember right the braces are welded to the inner rocker on each side.
I would do the halves and carefully cut the original pan around each floor brace. In fact, i have seen welding cause more problems than it will solve, especially if the back sides of the welds can not be properly treated and coated. We merely brushed the paint on, just like the silver coating. Full pan replacement scars me on a convertible.
In our last article we learned how easy it is to remove the body from the vw bug. And maybe the epoxy would result in a more rustproof seam. On an old car there are too many areas that will need little brackets and seams that need replacement along with the pans. One thing i know is that i don’t want to spend $1000 to get patch panels put in that will leave me with seams.
